He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals on September 14, 1939, and after training at Kingston, Ontario, proceeded to England with the 1st Division. He served in France with his unit and was evacuated to England from Brest after the successful German offensive in 1941. In 1942 Lieutenant Besen was chosen to undergo officer training at Sandhurst Military College, where he graduated in 1943. He landed in France on D-Day and saw action with his tank unit in Belgium.
