ZAGLEMBIE ASSOCIATION (ASSOCIATION OF ZAGLEMBIE JEWS OF

Administrative History:
A group of Zaglembie (Poland) Jews who survived the Holocaust arrived
in Montreal in 1947. They soon formed an organization to “revive
and continue their culture and traditions” and to remember their
past. As of 1958, members of the Association of Zaglembie Jews of Montreal,
like most landsmanschaft, have been keeping in touch with their fellow
Jews who remained in Zaglembie or who emigrated to Israel. As well, the
Association sells burial plots to members and raises funds for local Jewish
organizations and for Israel. To commemorate those from their part of
Poland who perished in the Holocaust, members erected a monument in the
Association’s cemetery in Duvernay, Quebec.

Biographical Sketch:
From the Ukraine (Dniepero Dzjierzink), first lived in Winnipeg after
coming to Canada. An engineer by profession, he took up writing after
Peristroyka.

Biographical Sketch:
Harry Zimmerman is the father of the donor. Reuven, who died in 2005, was his
brother. Reuven was born in 1925. He worked as a Via Rail conductor and as a
taxi driver. Never married, he was companion to Marie-Flore Lortie for 30 years,
until her death from cancer.
Custodial History:
The collection was donated by Arlene Zimmerman on Aug. 3, 2007.
Scope and Content:
Circumcision certificate from Rabbi J.L. Colton for Harry Zimmerman (the donor’s
father) in 1925. New Years cards printed for his family. From Reuven Zimmerman:
documents relating to his work at Via Rail and small slide-photo of him in his
railway car, photos with his taxi, work identification cards, birth certificate
information and death notice, portrait photos.

ZIONIST ORGANIZATION OF CANADA/CANADIAN ZIONIST FEDERATION.

Administrative History:
The first Canadian Zionist society was founded in Montreal in
1898. The Federation of Zionist Societies of Canada, an umbrella
organization for it and other Canadian groups, was created in
1899, later to become the Zionist Organization of Canada (1925)
and then the Canadian Zionist Federation (1967). The Zionist
Organization of Canada/CZF coordinates the Zionist societies
across Canada, and sponsors the Jewish National Fund and Keren
Hayesod. Their affiliate groups have included Habonim, Young
Judea and Hadassah. The Zionist Organization of Canada/CZF runs
conventions, sends delegates to the World Zionist Convention,
promotes aliyah, trips to Israel, lectures, pro-Israel rallies
and other such events, releases informational publications, and
has many educational programs and materials.

Biographical Sketch:
Rabbi Judah Zlotnik was born in Plock, Poland, in 1888. Pioneer in Yiddish
and rabbinic studies in Canada; was executive director: Jewish National
Fund in Canada, Zionist Organization of Canada, Board of Jewish Education
in South Africa; founder and head of Mizrachi Organization in Poland and
headed that organization in Canada and South Africa; settled in Israel
and changed family name to Avida. He died in Israel in 1962.
Scope and Content:
Published articles and pamphlets in Yiddish and English on religion, literature,
education, anti-Semitism, folklore. Personal correspondence. Press clippings
on Jewish education in South Africa. Manuscript in Yiddish of his revised
edition of Solomon Z. Vetzler’s book Enquiries of the Heart.
