YOUNG ISRAEL OF MONTREAL (SYNAGOGUE). - 1936-1990. - 0.13 metres of textual records.

Administrative History:
As a small Orthodox congregation, the Young Israel of Montreal got its start in 1924, using the United Talmud Torah Bialik school building on Jeanne Mance for services. There were several moves throughout the decades, as well as the establishment of a school. Associated with the international Young Israel Movement, the congregation split in the early 1940s but reunited several years later. The synagogue was incorporated in 1945. By 1949, their present building was constructed on Hillsdale as a community centre. The sanctuary was completed in 1954. The synagogue school merged with the Adath Israel school to form the Hebrew Academy in the 1960s. Due to shifting populations, the Young Israel presently accommodates Moroccan and Egyptian services and a Belzer Hasidim school; this has also led to the founding of Young Israel congregations in Chomedey and St. Laurent.
