OBERMAN, Morris and Judith. - 1920-1984. - 38 photographs. - 5 sound elements. - 28 artefacts.

Biographical Sketch:
Morris Oberman (1900-1987) fought in the Jewish Legion in Palestine, he was later honoured by Israel for his role in helping it attain its independence. Judith (1902-2000), née Braslavsky, was active in Pioneer Women. Both were leaders in the Montreal Labour Zionist Movement. Both of Judith's brothers were well-known scholars: Moshe Braslavsky was a historian, while Yosef was a geographer of the land of Israel.

Custodial History:
The collection was donated in 2 parts prior to 1988 by Mr. and Mrs. Oberman.

The collection is divided into two parts reflecting date of donation.

Biographical Sketch:
Judith Braslavsky Oberman was born in the Ukraine in 1902. She was 4 years old when her father decided in 1905 to immigrate with his wife and 5 children to the Land of Israel. She spent the first 20 plus years of her life there going to school, working and speaking Hebrew like a native. After marrying Morris the two left for Canada for economic reasons. But for the rest of their life they remained steadfast in their love and dedication to the Zionist cause and the Hebrew language.

Diaries of J. Oberman in Hebrew and Yiddish, 1936-1937 and1958. Correspondence, 1950-1984. Pioneer Women journals, 1970-1982. Scrapbook of obituaries to her brothers Moshe (1902-1962) and Yosef (1896-1972), who changed the family name to Braslavi, a file on her brother Moshe, 1958-1964). Hebrew books and journals written by the two brothers. Photographs of Kinderland camp, 1957. Photographs of Ashdod cardiac clinic, 1970. Military badges and medals collected by Morris Oberman, 1961-1982. Hebrew tapes about the Six Day War, tapes of lectures and family messages in Hebrew by Yosef Braslavi, 1967.

Biographical Sketch:
Yoseph Braslavsky, later known as Braslavi, was born in 1896 and died in 1972. He was a pioneer geographer of the land of Israel.

ORSHAN, Sam = Raoul Wallenberg Movement (see also Russian Jewish Archives Project). - 2000-2004. - 24 photographs. - 1 video.

Biographical Sketch:
Sam Orshan is the coordinator of Raoul Wallenberg International Movement for Humanity, and works with Vera Parnes on events organized by this group. They have arranged for a monument at Place de Cathedrale in downtown Montreal, where they hold events. Events in Montreal and Ottawa draw Wallenberg-assisted survivors, Canadian politicians and diplomats. Orshan was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and is a Holocaust survivor. He has additional material on RW, incl. copies of films. Sa. CJC collection - RW tributes.

Custodial History:
Sam Orshan donated this collection in July 27, 2004.

Scope and Content:
1 videotaped interview (English) of Orshan, by Bari Stalman - general bibliography, Holocaust, in second part re: connection to Raoul Wallenberg and tribute efforts. 19 photos taken by donor at various Wallenberg tributes and events Montreal and Ottawa. Details efforts of Jews helped by Wallenberg to honour his memory.

OTSEP, Nadega (see also Russian Jewish Archives Project). - 2005. - Ca. 0.02 metres of textual records.

Biographical Sketch:
Mrs. Otsep was born in Moscow in 1920. She came to Canada around 1995, joining her daughter and family. She obtained her medical diploma as a surgeon on the day the Germans invaded Russia and served with the infantry during the war. Afterwards she worked in hospitals, and in cancer research.

Custodial History:
Mrs. Otsep donated this collection on May 26th, 2005.

Scope and Content:
Memoir of Moscow-born surgeon, in Russian infantry in WWII, written for newspaper of Lev Shif (in Russian) with editing notes by a Shif family member. Photocopies of Russian Diplomas, certificates and awards, passport, work card. Notes from interview here.

OSTRY, Ethel (Kleinstein). - 1946-1968. - 0.6 metres of textual records. - 323 photographs. - 1 painting.

Biographical Sketch:
Ethel Ostry Kleinstein was a social worker involved with the War Orphans Project of 1947-1948. Previously she had worked in Palestine with Henrietta Szold and in various Canadian cities with neglected children, unwed mothers, Hebrew relief, and Baron de Hirsch Family Services. She came to Montreal to take the position of executive director of the Central Division of Canadian Jewish Congress. She was then sent by UNRRA to Europe from 1945 to 1948 to work with the War Orphans Project, which brought 1,116 children to Canada.

Scope and Content:
Two photo albums, also reproductions of photos. Photocopies or typed reproductions of all photograph backs. 1 small painting. Copy of poem. Correspondence. Alphabetical directories of Polish Holocaust survivors. This material pertains to the European phase of the War Orphans Project, 1947.
